Jan Behnke's Memoirs from the September 1939 campaign: military service

Among the interesting moments were plane crashes, and during my short service there were three such accidents.:
A night flight on a Karas aircraft lost visibility of the runway at some point during landing due to the fact that they had lowered their approach too much and visibility was blocked by a forest. So the plane began to land on the treetops, cutting them down until it landed on the thick trunks of this young forest, just 10 meters from the airport. The plane was completely destroyed and beyond repair. It was written off. One crew member suffered minor injuries.
The second crash of a combat aircraft "Moose". The plane was delivered from the base in Demblin to the airport in Toruni as an exhibit for pilot training. Since it was a modern combat aircraft, its flight was kept in the strictest secrecy. Airport security has been increased, all access roads are closed to civilian traffic, and identity cards and passes are strictly monitored. The moment of landing has arrived. Unfortunately, the plane was piloted by pilots who did not know which area of the airport was under cultivation, that is, part of the airport was plowed, forbidden and planted with grass. And the new, newly concreted runways were temporarily unused. Therefore, after landing, the plane made a sharp turn, entered the newly cultivated airport, hit the ground and stood upright. The entire aircraft was destroyed, disassembled and sent to Demblin in parts.
The third accident occurred during an exercise, the P11 aircraft incorrectly calculated the distance from the attacked aircraft, so that it cut off its landing gear with a propeller, while it fell to the ground near the hangars. The pilot died on the spot...
I wrote down the memory of my father (as far as I remember) after we organized a trip in the footsteps of his struggle in June 1995. We visited the village of Pentek, Sobota, then drove towards Sokhachev, where, driving along a country road, Dad recognized the fields where the fighting took place. Later, after a long search, we found a gymnasium in Sochachev, which housed a field hospital. The building has been expanded externally.
We stayed in the area until August 29, and the units carrying out the fortifications were withdrawn earlier, so the soldiers left the area by August 27, despite the fact that the work had not begun. We continued to serve, as there was no order to liquidate the post. It was only on the night of August 28-29 that we were notified of the station's liquidation and its return to its original position. Having no other means of transport, we continued our way back by bike to Brodnica, and then by a random car to Torun. According to the order, we were to report our arrival to the headquarters of the 8th Gendarmerie squadron for further orders, and the mobilization envelopes were to be opened there.
